SAPI stands for Small Arms Protective Insert, while ESAPI stands for Extended Small Arms Protective Insert. ESAPI’s polyurethane and boron carbide mixture make it stronger than others. Because boron carbide in the composition of the plates is denser than in SAPI plates, the plate’s weight is usually heavier. ESAPI and SAPI armor are both designed to go under the soft liner and under a body armor jacket. ESAPI, however, is more resistant to degradation because of its mixture of polyurethane and boron carbide. ESAPI vests are stronger, better, and mostly used by military personnel because of their composition.
