Body Armor

Soft body armors are not that bad, here’s why

Soft body armor mainly consists of layers of fabric made of high-performance fibers. Soft body armor is mostly used together with hard body armor by soldiers on the battlefield to provide enough ballistic protection or worn alone by law enforcement officers, who are likely to face lower levels of ballistic threat.

You think the use of soft armor as bullet proof vests by law enforcement officers is ineffective? How can a soft piece of clothing be a bullet proof vest?

The soft armor consists of long strands of fiber interlaced to form a dense net. KEVLAR is the most popular and common material used in making a soft armor. It is a lightweight, looks like a traditional clothing fiber, but is about five times stronger than a piece of steel of the same weight. When interwoven into a dense net, it can absorb a great amount of energy. Soft body armor inserts are made of strong Kevlar and Para-aramid materials. These inserts are placed in the front and back of vests and are made of protective ballistic material, which is held inside of a carrier. The materials for these inserts are woven together and made to spread the impact and energy of bullets and other projectiles.

Here are some of the uses and features of soft armor.

  • Soft armors are lighter, more comfortable and increases maneuverability.
    • Soft armors have multiple layers of ballistic-resistant materials.
    • They contain fibers that absorb and disperse the energy of the bullet.
    • When soft armor is used bullet often deforms and catches in ballistic solution.
    • They serve as protection against handgun threats.
    • Soft armor is best used as concealed armor for patrol or other duty with long hours.
    • Soft armor is lighter, flexible, and more comfortable than hard armor.
    • Soft armors are designed to stop pistol rounds.
