What you didn’t know about the North Korean military helmets

The North Korea has arguably one of the most powerful armies in the world with some of the most advanced technologies and weapons. However, having a great tactical helmet plays a great role in their strength as an army.

The Korean People’s Army Ground Force also known as the KPAGF is the main branch of the Korean People’s Army, responsible for land-based military operations. A soldier is as protected as the quality of armor he has on. The KPA officers and soldiers are most often seen wearing a mix of olive green or tan uniforms. Not known for heavy plate carriers and body armor, the KPA officers are often seen in their basic dress uniform which consists of a tunic and pants and white tunics for general officers worn during special occasions. The female soldiers wear knee-length skirts but can sometimes wear pants too.

When it comes to tactical helmets and head gears for head protection, a steel helmet has been an evident choice of the KPA. The DPRK produced Type 40 helmet which is a copy of the Soviet SSH40; a tactical helmet used by the Soviet Union during World War II. This tactical helmet seems to be the most common headgear of the KPA. It can also be worn sometimes with a camouflage covering. This is to ensure that the wearers are properly protected during missions and special assignments.

There are also some reports on the use of the M40 helmets by some of the North Korean army forces. The Soviet Union themed tactical helmet, M40, is still in service with the NKPA (North Korean Peoples Army). However, there are certain evident differences from the previous models used during the war. Some obvious differences are in the liner, its construction and quality.
